In our discussion we aim to provide education about lung cancer screening and awareness to our Asian American Pacific Islander* (AAPI) Community.

In this HouseCalls we will discuss the prevention, early detection, and treatment of lung cancer.

This is a FREE, virtual interactive event open to the community. We have invited our Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) members and their families to listen and participate in the conversation.

*AAPI Community covers communities from Central Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Native Hawaii, Native Alaska, the Pacific Islands, the Indigenous people of the United States, and individuals with multiracial identities that include any of the above.

Speaker and Moderator Information

Dr. Hien Nicole Tran is an Internal Medicine physician. Born to Vietnamese parents, she grew up in Germany and moved to California right after medical school. She completed her residency training at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center. During her training, she studied differences in lung cancer cell types across different races especially Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. She now splits her time between taking care of patients and teaching Internal Medicine resident physicians at Kaiser Permanente, Oakland. When she is not at work, she loves to spend time with her family especially her two young children.

Dr. Jeffrey Velotta's clinical interests involve all aspects of thoracic surgery, especially minimally invasive lung and esophageal surgery, image-guided surgical techniques for small lung nodules, and multimodality treatment of mesothelioma. Along with his colleagues, he is committed to maintain Kaiser Permanente in Oakland as a center of excellence for the Bay Area and continue its values and success. He is looking forward to the exponential growth in thoracic surgery and inspired to provide the best surgical services and excellent patient care.

In addition to his full-time clinical duties at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center, he is a clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. His role entails teaching and training UCSF medical students and surgery residents throughout the course of the year. He is very interested in surgical quality research pertaining to outcomes in minimally invasive surgeries for lung and esophageal cancer. He currently has ongoing studies pertaining to novel ways to provide better pain relief after thoracic surgery, multimodality treatment of mesothelioma, and the incidence and outcomes for never-smokers with lung cancer.

His wife, also a Bay Area native, is an internal medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente and together they look forward to making you a priority and providing you the highest quality of care possible. In his spare time, you can find him with his two young boys at the park or on the beaches of Hawaii.

Dr. Peter Le grew up in Southern California, went to college at Cal, and am an energetic Cal Football and Los Angeles Lakers Fan. Along with discussing treatment options with patients, his goal is to help patients understand what their disease is, and what to expect with this disease. One of his joys is teaching Physicians in Training at the Intensive Care Unit. Fluent in both Spanish and Vietnamese he welcomes all patients in whom English is their second language.

Dr. Kyumin Shim is a second-year Internal Medicine Resident at Kaiser Oakland. She was born in South Korea and moved to California in the third grade. She completed her undergraduate and medical training in Northern California and she is excited to continue to serve her community here in the Bay Area. She enjoys trying out new restaurants and cafes, going on nature walks, and cooking and baking for her friends and family.

Dr. Linh Ngu is a resident doctor training in internal medicine who lives in Oakland. In her spare time she loves to travel, eat good food, exercise, and ride her bike . She was born in rural Viet Nam and spent her childhood there before moving to San Francisco with her family at 10 years old. She attended San Francisco public schools and UC Davis, where she discovered an interest in science, healthcare, and serving her community. She then moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane University Medical School, where she met her partner and and experienced the colorful culture of the Big Easy. After medical school, she and her partner moved to the Bay Area for residency where they are having a wonderful time taking care of the diverse population in the East Bay.
